On this day in 1961, the Wrightsville Steam Fire Engine & Hose Company No. 1 endured the tragic loss of Fireman James E. Yohe. Fireman Yohe, age 31, died in the line of duty after sustaining injuries while fighting a fire at the Strickler Garage near the intersection of Hellam Street and 9th Street in Wrightsville Borough. Fire Chief Robert Hilliar reported to the Columbia News that an employee of the garage was draining gasoline from a vehicle when it ignited causing the fire. Fireman Yohe left behind his wife, a 9 year old son, and a son that was born 2 weeks after his death.

The officers and membership of the Wrightsville Steam Fire Engine & Hose Company No. 1 honor James E. Yohe for his courageous sacrifice. We shall never forget!
